47' Trawler - SSTV Tsunami

The Tale of the Tsunami

We scheduled Memorial weekend, May 29th to move the Tsunami from Cabrillo to her new berth in Marina del Rey, but the tail end of a Pacific storm had gale warnings up, and 6 foot seas. I don't think so! So we delayed for a day, heading out of San Pedro at 0600 on Monday, May 30. All was well, with Capt Chuck at teh helm, Skipper Steve, Mate Greg and and S/A Taylor heading out to sea. Beautiful sunrise on the water, hot coffee brewing in the galley; how does it get any better!

So how does that Gilligan's Island song go? About an hour out of Angel's Gate, the remnants of that storm had maybe 4 foot swells tossing us - and the fuel, and all the crud in the tanks - around a little as we neared PV. We admit to three of us christening three sides of the boat (never be downwind), but I'll let you guess who the three were.

Oh, remember the crud in the tanks? That doesn't stay there... it works its way into the previously pristine filters and clogs them up until she chokes and just bobs out there like a big old bouy.

So the intrepid Mate Mr Kramer gets them changed, and once up and running, he changes them 2 more times underway, until we stopped in Redondo. There our hero's from Islander met us with filters! Oh, and a crew member that's a diesel mechanic. So engine and generator filters changed, we continue uphill to Marina del Rey, changing filters underway a couple more times, the last time within heaving line distance to the MdR channel! I think we changed filters 6 times on the engine, twice on the generator.

We finally got her tied up in her new home, adjacent to the Manta, almost 10 hours after we started. Come on down and see her! She's going to be sitting there until we get enough cash to have the tanks pumped out and cleaned (they get roughly TWICE the cost of fuel per gallon to pump it OUT!), and we get the bottom done. We do take donations...

Chapter I

On April 21, Ship 11 Skipper and a contingent of the Ship's leadership participated in the haul out of the Trawler Tsunami. We met the owners at Cabrillo on San Pedro, and Capt Chuck helped drive as we motored to the Long Beach Marine shipyard, where yard manager Tony and his crew hauled her out on the heavy lift. Marine Surveyor Rick Gorman spent the better part of the day giving her hull and major systems a thorough inspection, and the owners began the process of briefing us on the systems and their operation.

On May 3, the Survey was forwarded, along with relevant Responsible Operating and Maintenance Party documents, to the Insurance company for their review. This may take a few days, and once approved, we will make the down payment on the required insurance. There will be operational stipulations and repairs required, including Bottom Cleaning and Paint.

We are working to schedule time with the boat's mechanic with our Engineering staff, to further brief us on the vessels systems.

We must complete the necessary vessel transfer forms, Coast Guard Vessel Documentation, and a Coast Guard Vessel Safety Inspection.

If everything continues to go well, on Memorial weekend we will be relocating her to her new home in Marina del Rey, adjacent to the Islanders vessel, the SSTV Manta.
